How Much Rent Can You Afford in 2026? Income-Based Guide

30 % rule is old. 2026 adds metro hikes, 5G plans, inflation. We rebuilt the rule by salary slab – take-home, not CTC.

₹20 k Take-Home

Max rent ₹6 k (30 %) → shared PG ₹4-5 k, food ₹8 k, commute ₹1 k, fun ₹1 k, save ₹4 k. Cities: Indore, Nagpur, Lucknow.

₹30 k Take-Home

Max rent ₹9 k → 1 BHK outskirts Hyd/Pune, food ₹10 k, metro ₹1.2 k, EMI phone ₹1.5 k, save ₹7 k.

₹40 k Take-Home

Max rent ₹12 k → 1 BHK Bangalore BTM, food ₹11 k, commute ₹1.5 k, gym ₹600, save ₹14 k.

₹60 k Take-Home

Max rent ₹18 k → 1 BHK Mumbai metro line, food ₹13 k, cab ₹3 k, Netflix+pub ₹2 k, save ₹24 k.

₹1 L Take-Home

Max rent ₹30 k → 2 BHK premium Gurgaon, food ₹15 k, car EMI ₹8 k, international save ₹47 k.

New 2026 Rule

EMI + rent ≤ 50 % take-home. If you have phone/laptop EMIs, reduce rent cap accordingly.

Auto-calculate your cap on MyKamra Rent Affordability – we subtract your existing EMIs before 30 % rule.
